DIY Ice Cream Toppings

Picture the platonic ideal of ice cream—there’s probably a good chance that it includes some classic ice cream toppings like chocolate chips, sprinkles, or chocolate syrup.

But if you ever get bored topping off your Cold Cow ice cream with the same old pre-packaged toppings, consider trying something a little more ambitious! You can save money and learn a tasty new skill by making your own ice cream toppings—you can even use them for other desserts too!

Spoonful.com has assembled a list of 13 fun ice cream topping recipes that you can try yourself at home. Whether you’ve got a pint of How Now Brown Cow or some simply delicious Udderly Vanilla, your friends will be so impressed if you can manage to pull any of these off.

Mama Make It suggests a delicious homemade dark chocolate syrup:

1 1/2 cups of sugar
3/4 cup unsweetened dark chocolate powder
1 cup of water
1 tsp vanilla
In a saucepan whisk together sugar, cocoa and salt. Add water and bring to a boil. Stir frequently to avoid sticking and burning. Turn off heat (if you use gas reduce heat to low) and cook for 1 minute. Remove from heat, add vanilla and let cool. SO EASY! Store in the fridge in an airtight container.
