DIY Ice Cream Toppings

Picture the platonic ideal of ice cream—there’s probably a good chance that it includes some classic ice cream toppings like chocolate chips, sprinkles, or chocolate syrup.

But if you ever get bored topping off your Cold Cow ice cream with the same old pre-packaged toppings, consider trying something a little more ambitious! You can save money and learn a tasty new skill by making your own ice cream toppings—you can even use them for other desserts too!

Spoonful.com has assembled a list of 13 fun ice cream topping recipes that you can try yourself at home. Whether you’ve got a pint of How Now Brown Cow or some simply delicious Udderly Vanilla, your friends will be so impressed if you can manage to pull any of these off.

Mama Make It suggests a delicious homemade dark chocolate syrup:

1 1/2 cups of sugar
3/4 cup unsweetened dark chocolate powder
1 cup of water
1 tsp vanilla
In a saucepan whisk together sugar, cocoa and salt. Add water and bring to a boil. Stir frequently to avoid sticking and burning. Turn off heat (if you use gas reduce heat to low) and cook for 1 minute. Remove from heat, add vanilla and let cool. SO EASY! Store in the fridge in an airtight container.

Put a Face on that Cone!

When you go to a fine dining restaurant or even to a friend’s party where food is being served, presentation certainly matters. Of course it’s great for the food itself to be good, but especially with ice cream, some occasions call for a more decorative presentation.

If you’re one of those people who opts to eat their ice cream out of a cone rather than a cup (or even straight out of the container!), we’ve got some inventive, fun ice cream cone ideas for you.

Food blogger Lyuba of Will Cook for Smiles wrote a blog post last week about some ice cream cone creations that would really put a smile on your face. With some fun toppings, you can modify or replicate these for a fun treat that your friends can’t help but photograph.

Among her creations were a panda, made with vanilla ice cream, creme-filled cookies, and candy for the eyes:

A hedgehog, made with ice cream, mini marshmallows, chocolate magic shell, candy eyes, and chocolate kisses:

For a prideful snack that you’ll be helpless against: a lion, featuring red and orange M&M for the mane, chocolate kisses with the tops cut off, and candy eyes.

If you want to try any of these fun ideas, be sure to use your favorite Cold Cow flavor, which you can find at a retailer near you!

Taking the “Ice” Out of Ice Cream?

Here at Cold Cow Ice Cream, we prefer to keep it simple. With a super premium, creamy ice cream base and classic toppings combined creatively, we’re pretty proud of our traditional approach.

So while we have no plans to do anything outrageous, it always amuses us to see what innovative ice cream fans are doing to reinvent our favorite snack.

Before we go into what the latest development is, first think about a nice big pint of ice cream, just the way you like it. What are its qualities? We’ll take a wild guess that “cold” is one of the things that first come to mind.

Sure, fried ice cream has been around for years. But a restaurant in Spain is taking it a step further, with baked ice cream. Here’s some of the scoop, from Gizmodo.com:
Most of us are happy to eat ice cream straight out of the container; even scooping it into a cone seems like too much of a hassle. But a restaurant in Spain called El Celler de Can Roca has come up with a novel way to serve the frozen treat—they bake it. Or, more specifically, they use a machine called the Oxymoron Maker II to entomb a scoop of ice cream inside a freshly baked brioche.
Here’s the Oxymoron Maker II in action:

Personally, we’ll stick to cold, refreshing super premium ice cream ourselves! But if you find yourself craving the real thing, grab a pint or a milkshake today!
