When you were a kid, your parents might have warned against too much chocolate. Sure, it probably wasn’t smart to eat your entire Halloween candy haul all in one sitting, but that’s what being a kid is for, right?
By now, maybe you’ve grown up and have learned that moderation is key for mostly anything in life -- yes, even chocolate. If you’re a Cold Cow fan, we understand if this can be difficult. So many of our flavors feature that classic decadent treat, be in chocolate chips, cookie crumbles, or a chocolate ice cream base.
Fortunately, you can still indulge with minimal guilt because chocolate (in moderation, of course) does boast numerous health benefits. According to the Cleveland Clinic, chocolate offers the following:
Flavonoids help protect plants from environmental toxins and help repair damage. They can be found in a variety of foods, such as fruits and vegetables. When we eat foods rich in flavonoids, it appears that we also benefit from this "antioxidant" power.
Antioxidants are believed to help the body's cells resist damage caused by free radicals that are formed by normal bodily processes, such as breathing, and from environmental contaminants, like cigarette smoke. If your body does not have enough antioxidants to combat the amount of oxidation that occurs, it can become damaged by free radicals. For example, an increase in oxidation can cause low-density lipoprotein (LDL), also known as "bad" cholesterol, to form plaque on the artery walls.
Flavanols are the main type of flavonoid found in cocoa and chocolate. In addition to having antioxidant qualities, research shows that flavanols have other potential influences on vascular health, such as lowering blood pressure, improving blood flow to the brain and heart, and making blood platelets less sticky and able to clot. Here at Cold Cow, we look for any excuse to eat some chocolate. Luckily, we have several chocolatey flavors to pick from, including Moo & Cookies, Moochachino, and of course, our classic How Now Brown Cow. Looking for a pint or 48 oz. package?
