Presidential Ice Cream Fun Facts

Today is Presidents’ Day, and what better way to celebrate than with one of the oldest American treats: ice cream!  In fact, many U.S. presidents contributed to the introduction and popularity of ice cream in the states. Here are a few fun presidential ice cream facts that you may not know:

Thomas Jefferson loved ice cream so much that he had an elaborate 18 step recipe for vanilla. We would have loved to taste it!

Ice cream was one of George Washington’s favorite foods. It is rumored that the founding father had once purchased $200 worth of ice cream for one summer. That translates to over $3,000 today.

Strawberry ice cream become popular after Dolley Madison first served it at James Madison’s second Inaugural Ball.

Ice cream was recognized for its part in American history when Ronald Reagan officially declared July as National Ice Cream Month.

How to Make Sweetheart Sundaes

Sweethearts candies have become a Valentine's Day icon.  More than 8 billion candies are sold each year in the six weeks prior to February 14th.  The heart-shaped candies have been around for quite some time too. They were first produced in 1901, making them over a century old.

Naturally, sweethearts candies and ice cream make a sweet pair, so we decided to make our own Sweetheart Sundaes!  Here is how you too can make your sweetheart one:

What you'll need:
Ice Cream
Sweethearts Candies
Waffle Bowl
Whipped Topping
Optional:
Brownie pieces
Strawberry Sauce
Instructions:
Get some of you or your sweetheart's favorite ice cream and dish a couple scoops in a waffle bowl. Some of our favorite flavors to pair with sweetheart candies are:

Party Time
Udderly Vanilla
Next, layer your ice cream with some whipped topping and add the sweethearts with messages face up.  We recommend drizzling some Strawberry Sauce for extra flavor and Valentine's Day spirit.

You can also add other favorite toppings and if you want to go the extra mile, we love this recipe for Sweetheart Brownies from EasyBaked.  They would be great to use as a chocolate foundation for your sundae.
